Which problem do you actually have

Most people searching for a Cozi Family Organizer alternative are not unhappy with the calendar. They are stuck on the layer underneath it, the recurring housework that nobody wants to be the memory of.

A family calendar answers what is happening on Thursday. A chore system answers something else: whose turn is it, how often does this come back, and was it actually done. On a screen the two look similar. In practice, a tool built for one rarely carries the other well.

So sort your own case before comparing anything. If two work schedules and a school trip keep colliding, you want a calendar, and this article is going to tell you to stay where you are. If the bathroom only gets cleaned when one person finally cracks, you want something that owns recurrence and turns. That second problem is the one we spend our time on, and naming it out loud is half the work: we wrote about that in making the mental load visible.

How did we check this

The method is deliberately narrow. Everything below about Cozi was read on 21 September 2026 from one public source, its US App Store listing. Every price and every rating on this page comes from the US storefront, for Cozi and for Bunkly alike, so the two are always measured on the same shelf. Your own country and tax will change the numbers.

We did not install Cozi to write this, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. That means we describe what the listing states, not how the app feels after a month of real family use. Anything we could not read from that source is marked as unverified rather than quietly filled in.

We also make Bunkly. Read the Cozi figures as facts you can check yourself in one click, and read our opinions as opinions.

What Cozi Family Organizer is, in numbers

Cozi is the older product by a very wide margin. It first reached the App Store on 21 December 2010 and was last updated on 31 August 2026, which is close to sixteen years of continuous shipping.

The rating is 4.8 across 399,070 ratings on the US storefront. A number that size is worth reading slowly. Almost four hundred thousand people rated this app, so the 4.8 is not a handful of friendly early adopters, it is a settled verdict from an enormous sample. Bunkly has nothing to put next to that and will not have for years.

The download is free, and the free tier is ad-supported.

What you get is a household hub rather than a chore tool. A shared colour-coded family calendar. Shopping and to-do lists. A recipe box, meal planning, and agenda emails that arrive in your inbox. Up to twelve people share one account, and Cozi runs in a browser as well as on a phone. There is a chores list in there too, sitting alongside everything else.

One design fact, stated without judgement, because it decides whether Cozi fits a home or not: the account is fully shared. Everyone included can view, add, edit and delete any data. For most families that is exactly right. For a flatshare with an awkward history, it may not be.

One more thing worth knowing before you download. The App Store listing declares a single interface language, English.

If the calendar is the broken thing in your house, Cozi already solves it, and nothing here should talk you out of that.

What the paid tiers cost and cover

Cozi lists three in-app purchases on the US storefront: Cozi Gold at $39.00, a one-year subscription to Cozi Gold at $29.99, and Cozi Max at $79.99. Only one of those three names states a billing period, so the $29.99 yearly line is the one we can compare with any confidence.

Gold removes the ads and adds month view, calendar search, more reminders, a birthday tracker and shopping mode. Max goes further into AI, with event import, recipe creation and meal planning.

Bunkly has one paid tier. Bunkly Pro costs $3.99 a month, $22.99 a year, or $49.99 as a one-off purchase, with a seven-day free trial on the two subscriptions. Pro covers up to six members, unlimited tasks and zones, full stats and history, and automatic rotation between members.

The free plan is deliberately a single-person plan: one household, one member, up to 15 tasks, 3 zones, and the Maintenance and Garden modules capped at 5 items each. It works offline and ships light and dark themes. Both plans are detailed on the features page and the pricing page.

The three-year cost, on the prices we can date

Three-year cost of each plan on the US App Store Over three years, Bunkly bought outright costs 49.99 dollars, Bunkly Pro yearly costs 68.97 dollars, a one-year Cozi Gold subscription renewed three times costs 89.97 dollars, and Bunkly Pro monthly costs 143.64 dollars. Bunkly, one-off Bunkly, yearly Cozi Gold, yearly Bunkly, monthly $49.99 $68.97 $89.97 $143.64
Three-year cost, US App Store prices read on 21 September 2026. Blue is Cozi, amber is Bunkly. Plans whose billing period the listing does not state are not plotted.

Two caveats before you take anything from that chart.

First, it only plots the plans whose billing period we could actually read. Cozi’s $39.00 Gold entry and its $79.99 Max entry carry no period in their names, so annualising them would be a guess. The in-app purchase list shows no monthly option for Cozi either, so there is no monthly row to compare against Bunkly’s. Whether those two unlabelled entries are yearly or one-off, we cannot tell you.

Second, and this matters more, the two apps do not do the same job, so a cost line is not a verdict. Cozi’s yearly subscription buys a calendar, lists, recipes and meal planning for twelve people. Bunkly’s buys a chore engine for six. Bunkly is $7 a year cheaper, which is a real number and a small one. Paying less for a narrower tool is only a saving when the narrower tool is the one you needed.

One sentence on advertising, because it is a genuine difference and not more than that: Bunkly carries no ads on any plan, and Cozi’s free tier is ad-supported.

What we built differently, and why

Bunkly is not a smaller Cozi. It is a chore engine, and three decisions taken while building it explain the shape of the thing.

No points, no badges, no leaderboards, no mascot

That is a choice, and it is written into our design notes as a rule. A reward that is not renewed stops working, and the housework it was propping up comes straight back. In a shared home the failure mode is worse than a simple reset, because whoever stops playing first looks like the one who stopped caring. We would rather the app never create that accusation. Plenty of households will disagree, and for them an app built on scores is the better buy.

Recurrence anchored on the last completion

Most chore apps pin a task to a weekday. Clean the bathroom on Saturday. Miss one Saturday and you are instantly late, miss two and the list turns into a wall of red that you stop opening.

Bunkly anchors each recurrence on the day the task was actually completed. Clean the bathroom on Monday instead, and the next occurrence counts from Monday. One slip stays one slip, it does not cascade, and you are never punished twice for the same delay.

Undoing a tick does not wreck the schedule

Same idea, smaller scale. Tick something by mistake, undo it, and Bunkly recomputes the next due date from the previous real completion rather than from the mistake.

We found one limit while building it, and we would rather state it than bury it: if the due date had been moved by hand before the mis-tap, the undo restores the calculated date, not your manual one. That case is rare, and we shipped rather than hold the release for it.

On Pro, rotation between members assigns itself, so nobody in the house has to take the job of reminding everyone.

Two rows need a sentence rather than a number. The ratings row is the most lopsided line in the table and it is not close: 4.8 from 399,070 people is evidence, and no rating at all is not. The languages row runs the other way, since Bunkly ships six interface languages and the Cozi listing declares one.

What Bunkly does not have

It is three weeks old. It reached the App Store on 3 September 2026 and has no rating, no reviews, no update history and no community to ask. Almost everything you can read about it was written by us, this page included. Cozi has close to sixteen years and a six-figure pile of ratings behind it. That gap is real, and no feature list closes it.

The functional gaps are just as concrete. Bunkly has no calendar, no shopping list, no recipe box, no meal planning, no agenda emails and no web version. A household caps at six people where Cozi covers twelve. If any single one of those lines matters in your home, the comparison is already finished.

So which one

Stay on Cozi Family Organizer if the calendar is the centre of your household. A family of five with three school schedules, a shared shopping list and a recipe box feeding the meal plan is well served there, and Bunkly would be a downgrade on every one of those points. Stay too if you need more than six people on one account, if you want the browser version on a desktop, or if the ads on the free tier simply do not bother you.

Try Bunkly if the calendar is not the thing that is failing. If the argument in your house is about the rota rather than the diary, if you want the interface in French, German, Spanish, Italian or Polish, if no ads and no analytics matter to you, or if you would rather buy once than subscribe indefinitely. The free plan is built for one person, so you can load your own list and judge the engine before anybody pays anything.
